Background

Currently, permanent hair dyes require the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H202) at the time of application to activate and develop the colour. There have been a number of cases in the news where consumers have been exposed to either the hydrogen peroxide itself or to a reaction intermediate that causes an allergic reaction or chemical burn.

Technology

We're researching a new method for developing hair dyes without the need for hydrogen peroxide or any manipulation by the consumer beyond opening the bottle of hair dye. This technology is speedy, colour fast and inexpensive. Grey hairs can be coloured in as little as a few minutes. Our tests show that the colour remains intact for over 24 hours continuous washing in 50°C soapy water.
